Celebrating National Salvation Army Week

In 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower designated the week following Mother's Day as National Salvation Army Week

"Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood... Their work as been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans, giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won respect of us all." —President Dwight D. Eisenhower

I Am Doing the Most Good Shield

From May 15-21, 2017, The Salvation Army will be shining a spotlight on those who make their work serving the most vulnerable possible—their army of dedicated volunteers, their generous donors, and their clients, including more than 500,000 families and individuals assisted annually in the Bay Area. Whether offering a warm nourishing meal to a senior or providing a safe, caring environment in the heart of the Tenderloin for underserved children, the Army could not serve San Franciscans in need without the community's continued kindness and support.

The Salvation Army is by far the most effective organization in the United States. No one comes close to it in respect to clarity of mission, ability to innovate, measurable results, dedication, and putting money to maximum use."
—Peter Drucker, Author & Management Expert renowned as "the founder of modern management."

A trio of frestive events are planned in the City including:

  • A Symbolic Homeless Feeding. Illustrating that The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center Homeless Outreach Program serves 24,000 homeless people annually. On a first come, first served basis, the public can enjoy free doughnuts and coffee via The Salvation Army canteen/mobile kitchen parked in the FIDI at the corner of Pine and Davis Streets, near Market Street, on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 7:00am to 9:00am
  • A Zumba Party and Open House at The Salvation Army KROC Center on Thursday, May 18, 2017 from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. Did you know that The Salvation Army has more than 400 afterschool programs across the country, and right here in San Francisco, the Army distributes over 10,000 school supplies and clothing items to children annually?
  • A Traditional Chinese Lunch accompanied by a Chinese Lion Dance at The Salvation Army SOMA Corps for nearly 100 predominately Cantonese and Mandarin-speaking seniors on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Did you know The Salvation Army provides almost 900,000 meals to San Francisco Bay Area families and children in need each year?

The Army Behind the Army

Volunteers

We could not serve over 500,000 Bay Area families and individuals each year without the kindness and support of our countless compassionate volunteers. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Donors

We are blessed with generous donors who join us in our mission of Doing the Most Good for San Franciscans in need. Each holiday season, one such donor Dig Deep SF raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase new toys and tech gadgets for The Salvation Army to distribute to thousands of underserved San Francisco children and teens.

Clients

Our clients inspire us with their courage and graciousness. From seniors who enjoy our Meals that Heal deliveries, and children who thrive with sports, arts, and music classes at the Kroc Center, to Marty—a single dad in recovery doing an outstanding job raising his son and rebuilding his career at Harbor House: Don't miss Marty's video story here.
